H. hermathena
n'a pas de relation mimétique avec d'autres papillons sauf, de façon
surprenante, une de ses sous-espèce, vereatta,
qui mime H. melpomene melpomene et H. erato
hydara.
Cette espèce, à la différence des autres espèces du genre, habite
préférentiellement les savanes, les lieux ouverts et plus secs que
l'habituelle forêt amazonnienne.
Cette espèce a longtemps été suspectée d'être un hybride entre H. erato hydara et H. charithonia. L'autre hypothèse était qu'elle soit l'espèce à l'origine d'une différenciation entre H. erato et H. charithonia. En fait, d'après Kozack puis Massardo, aucune preuve d'hybridation erato-charithonia n'a pu être détectée au niveau moléculaire et hermathena apparaît comme une espèce soeur d'erato ayant acquis une spécialisation à des habitats plus secs et herbeux.
